If you don't you don't want to read about my carpet cleaning challenges and models I've tried, skip to what I like about this vac!

My old Hoover Windtunnel model U5760-910 was working just fine at our previous rental house but the new rental house posed challenges that the older vacuum couldn't handle. Sure I changed the belt and the vac was quite noisy indicating the brush roller was in need of replacement. I would have been willing to order one and replace it easily but the vac was getting fouled up badly by this fine white powder we found left by previous renters here. Dust was collecting in the hepa filter and had to be banged out for a while each time I used it, creating a dust storm. There was no end in sight for this problem as it was also clogging this older single cyclonic bagless vac in a very short time of use causing me to clean it frequently before the filter reservoir well before it was full.

I bought a Shark Euro-Pro vac at Costco but took it back. It was only cleaning the top layer of the carpet and leaving the white dust in the carpet. It is not a heavy duty vac and the track width of vac is narrowed. The Shark is tiny, light and looks a cordless vac with a cord. I say this because I could use the old Hoover after the Shark and still clog the hepa filter with the white dust in a short period of use. The Shark got most of the lint out of the carpet and left the top looking groomed but left some lint and most of the white powder in the carpet.

I thought it was time for a Dyson but the cost was staggering even for a refurbished one so I started reading reviews on Amazon. The UH70015 caught my attention right away and I found the reviews quite helpful. I was used to the "Clean" indicator in this model and Hoover claims to be the only manufacturer providing the feature but they also make the UH70010 model Hoover UH70010 Platinum Collection Cyclonic Bagless Upright Vacuum Cleanerwithout the "Clean/Dirty" indicator. I highly recommend this one as the indicator is of great use to find the places in the carpet where this white powder is hiding. I would have given this vac 5 stars if it had quickly picked up the white powder but I have to frequently pass over the areas where it is. Without the indicator, I wouldn't have a clue where it is hiding!

I tried carpet cleaners to pick up the white powder and try to restore the pile but the problem may be wear of the carpet. The owners said the carpet was only two years old but previous renter had a large dog, small dog, and three kids. The carpet was professionally cleaned but within days the pile was tracked back down and had the smell of urine in it. I tried the Bissell Pro Heat 2x Turbo Up-Right Deep Cleaner{model 93002} that I found at Costco but returned it also because it simply was not picking up anything but a little dirty water and detergent. The double agitator is not counter rotating and it doesn't pickup lint and dirt like the older single agitator models did. The dirt and lint was sticking to the bottom of the unit and leaving spools of dirt and lint on top of the carpet which meant I had to pick it up and could not continue using the drying capability of that machine because it was filthy on the bottom and in the brush-rollers. I had to remove three screws and panels to clean this machine after each room or it would start leaving a mess. I ordered the Hoover Platinum Collection Carpet Cleaner with MaxExtract Technology, F8100900 to clean the carpets; it's an excellent machine and both these machines I would recommend if the expense isn't an issue. The machines are high quality but the cleaner was shipped with a defective spin brush block. Hoover is sending a replacement spin brush block. No installer necessary as the block is a user removable part for cleaning purposes. I spoke with a helpful, English speaking CSR and Hoover has a dedicated Platinum Collection help-line. The questions asked of me indicated that they wanted to know the root cause of failure and get me the right part. There was no indication that Hoover was trying to say the failure was due to misuse or neglect. I should expect the new part within a week. I will review the cleaner at some point after the replacement part arrives. There has been some speculation about Hoover being bought off by a foreign company but at least the support seems in tact still.

Some useful carpet cleaning ideas I found for this challenging carpet cleaning/restoration project was to use the cleaning machine in spot clean mode to brush-in the pretreatment cleaner and then use the "wash and rinse" mode. An optional tool found elsewhere to stand the pile up for drying is the "Grandi Groom". Google it and shop for the best price; it has other other uses as well, like pre-vac to loosen dirt and lint. I use it several times after each cleaning to try to restore pile but worn places are a challenge due to missing fibers (volume) and the pile does still tend to ball-up in the old worn fashion but frequent vacuuming and raking it with the Grandi Groom helps the carpet to look restored. Within a few days, it looks worn again so I vacuum and groom with the rake every two days. maybe eventually the restored look will last longer.(?) Vinegar and water is a good rinse to remove the excessive detergent left behind and leave the carpet soft and odor-free. The scent of vinegar may linger a bit until carpet dries. I think 3 to 5 ounces per gallon is the mix recommended but the cleaners that mix solution to water work well with plain vinegar in the cleaning reservoir in the wash cycle to do a vinegar rinse. The thing I like about the Platinum cleaner I have is that it does a water only rinse as the cleaner is pulled toward me. It uses a lot of water but is effective as a cleaner and rinser that way and it picks most of the water. The unit will pick up after itself, not leaving trails of lint and dirt behind, so it can effectively be used as a dryer to continue vacuuming excess water and use its heat to dry as well.

What I like about this vac: It does not clog despite the white powder found in this carpet. I need to rinse my hepa filter per user instructions but yet suction is still very effective. I like the user rotating indicator which reminds the user when to clean the top filter assembly. Strongest vac to carpet I've seen. The Shark Euro-Pro is strong but does not put the power to the bottom layers of carpet and will leave dust and lint in the carpet. Excellent warranty on this machine to stay in line with the expensive vacs available today. I like the height adjustment on the handle and the auto and manual brush-roll off modes. Good feel and quality; not as loud as previous Hoover vac. There is some rubber in the handle area to help minimize vibration but I think there could have been more rubber placed in this area to be more effective. I had considered a Dyson Ball but some users found the ball to be awkward in trials and the price is higher. Hoover claims that the multi-cyclonic design coupled with the their patented Windtunnel design is the most effective vacuum available today. I can't attest to that but the vac is the most effective vac I've tried thus far. My older Hoover Windtunnel was satisfactory until I moved here and found the "no suction loss cyclonic" vac a necessity. I'm not a pet owner but would recommend it for any long haired shedding mammal including humans.

What I don't like: The short extender hose and lack of attachments is a bit strange for a high-end vac. The hose will hardly reach anything beyond the vac's reach unless I remove hose from guides and stretch it (no included stretch hose for vacuuming stairs) and I like others, find the optional accessories offered elsewhere more useful. It would appear that the multi-cyclonic filter assembly posed a challenge to the on-board attachment accessory options of the past. No big deal and it's not a deal breaker. Cleanup is easy but it does require the user to press the release button while closing bottom lid of the dirt reservoir when emptying. Most would prefer not having to touch the bottom lid to avoid getting hands dusty but having to press the lid closed while pressing release button seems unavoidable, the hands have to be washed after dumping. Some have said that a gorilla couldn't close this flap if attempting to place the assembly back into the vac without closing bottom flap first. I agree. I usually wash after dumping anyway so it's no big deal to me. The reservoir snaps easily back into vac unit with one hand after the bottom lid is closed. But I do use both hands to guide it into place and rotate upwards into locked position which is secure but not as tight as the Shark Euro-Pro which does require a little more effort. I've read some reviews that stated that vac lost suction due to hair wrapped around a cylindrical cone inside the top assembly. The user manual does state that this should be cleaned as needed. A quarter turn CCW will remove it for easy cleaning. I have seen white dust and hair get collected here but has not caused a loss of suction; the vac was still very strong despite this. Perhaps a pet user would have to inspect and clean this regularly. Most of these shortcomings, I don't see as issues that could be overcome by a better design, the bottom door and latch of dirt reservoir is a maybe but I'm very happy with this purchase and feel the technology is the best it can be for the next 6 years. The brushroll and belt is not covered by the warranty and may need replacement every two years or less depending on use.

This thing is just plain amazing. The canister is SUPER easy to clean, cord is extra long, blue LEDs let you know what carpet setting you are on, and lights up the power button. LED on the bottom tells you if the floor is clean or dirty, super easy to use (its a heavy unit, but as soon as it powers on its almost as if it has an push assist motor), awesome colors, and very powerful. Everything you could ask for in a vac. A+!
